Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), is a non-profit 501 (c)(3), and the largest provider of shelter and services to homeless adults in Arizona. CASS has an immediate employment opportunity for an energetic and engaging individual to serve as full-time Employment and Benefits Specialist working directly with homeless veterans to obtain benefits and employment so they can become self-sufficient and end their homelessness. The Employment and Benefits Specialists is part of a team-based and passionate work environment that is dedicated to ending homelessness and generating positive measurable outcomes .

Essential Functions

Assist clients with applying and appealing SSI/SSDI and VA benefits:

  1. Complete interviews with clients to gather information to complete SSI/SSDI and/or VA applications;
  2. Initiate paperwork following SSI/SSDI Outreach Access and Recover (SOAR) process with clients eligible for and seeking social security benefits; assist clients in navigating the VA benefits system;
  3. Gather medical records, service records and other information to complete applications;
  4. Write medical summary reports for applications;
  5. Accompany clients to appointments at the Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration and/ or the Department of Social Services to apply for benefits;
  6. Accompany and/or transport clients to meetings with healthcare providers to obtain records and documentation related to their benefit applications.

Assist clients in finding employment:

  1. Advocate for hiring veterans; identify and establish relationships with companies who hire veterans; network with other employment specialist to share resources;
  2. Assess skills and previous vocational experience of clients by conducting intake discussions and reviewing case management notes; identify transferrable skills from military service to civilian jobs;
  3. Search for suitable job openings; review listings with clients;
  4. Conduct job readiness training, identify vocational training opportunities, advise clients on resume writing and online application submission;
  5. Supply clothing, bus tickets, haircut vouchers, voicemail accounts as required;
  6. Conduct follow-up meetings to provide continued support.

Ensure data integrity and accurate reporting:

  1. Enter client information into HMIS promptly after intake; maintain a case file for each client;
  2. Review updated case notes daily; maintain appropriate documentation of client eligibility;
  3. Complete training on data collection and department requirements;
  4. Provide accurate monthly, ad hoc, and grant monitoring reports.

Support the Mission of CASS:

  1. Coordinate with Veterans Case Managers to maximize efficiency and avoid duplication of effort;
  2. Support fund Development by providing wish lists and client success stories;
  3. Attend trainings, seminars and information sessions related to benefits and employment;
  4. Pro-actively communicate with CASS departments, campus partners and providers;
  5. Collaborate with other agencies.

Physical Activities and Working Conditions

  1. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, moving from various locations within the building, on the campus and off-site;
  2. Sitting at a desk for extended periods of time to accomplish tasks;
  3. Ability to lift, carry, push or pull objects up to 20 pounds unassisted;
  4. Manual dexterity in order to use keyboard and mouse;
  5. Close visual acuity to prepare and analyze reports and data;
  6. Visual acuity to operate a motor vehicle.


Skills / Requirements


  1. High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of two-year’s experience assisting and obtaining SSI / SSDI and VA benefits;
  2. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook calendaring, highly accurate data entry skills;
  3. Current knowledge of best practices for working with people experiencing mental illness, chronic homelessness and/or chemical dependency;
  4. Cursory knowledge of medical and psychiatric terminology and ability to write using the terminology;
  5. Knowledge of employment resources;
  6. Possess a valid Arizona Driver license, proof of insurance and satisfactory 39-month driving record;
  7. Ability to obtain State of Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.


  1. Bachelor’s degree in social work, social or behavioral science;
  2. Veteran with Honorable Discharge;
  3. Experience working with the homeless or impoverished;
  4. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
